I think it’s time.

This weekend, I’m going pet shopping.

It’s been over a year since my 14-year-old puppy died. Lil’ G was a great companion for years and helped me feel comfortable when I moved into my current apartment and lived completely and totally alone for the first time in my life. People who have constant battles with depression shouldn’t live alone, I’m told. Screw that.

Anyway, I’ve decided it’s time to bring a new pet into my life. Maybe not a dog this time. I don’t think it’s right to get a puppy if you don’t have lots of time to spend with it, and I’m not home all that often.

Cats are just out of the question. Never cared for them. No offense to cat people, but felines strike me as bitchy, predatorial creatures and nothing in my home should have more “don’t fuck with me” attitude than me.

I used to have hamsters growing up, but an unfortunate experience in college turned me off on them. My lesbian hamsters – according to the pet store, they were both female – apparently decided to adopt… twice! I went from having two lesbian rodents to having 18 in just a few weeks time. I couldn’t separate them fast enough.

I am considering a single (learned my lesson!) rabbit, but I’m sure it would destroy my apartment.

I also had a pet iguana for a few years. I named her Kat – short for Katherine (“But, before God, Kate, I cannot look greenly” Henry V). She was an interesting pet, but not exactly cuddly or anything. She would occasionally climb on me, but mostly ignored me unless I was trying to clean her tank.

I’ve had turtles, guinea pigs, gerbils, and even a frog. Never had any birds, but never really cared to either.

I wish I could get a monkey this time, but they’re too expensive for my budget.

I guess I’ll just explore over the weekend until I find something that catches my fancy – check the papers, etc. Maybe I’ll stick with a dog after all.

Oh, I also uploaded a few more chapters of my novel. Thus ends part 1 of the book. I still need to add a few things into the previously written chapters, but I’m ready to move on to part 2.
