Ew! Ew! Ew!
Monday, June 21st, 2004I got two frickin’ potentials! Not even marginally cool ones! And what the f-ck would I do with TWO GIRLS? I hope they enjoy each other, because I’ll be in the corner pretending to be barely interested.
So I put the pet plan on hold. I do want to get something fluffy and cuddly (or cold and scaly), but as I started to drive around on Friday night, the “check gauges” on my dashboard came on. Shortly after that, my engine started making loud clunking noises and sent out little bursts of burnt-rubber black clouds. I did what any red-blooded American male would do in that situation – ordered cocktails at the bar and cried to my lesbian friend. Why are so many of my lesbian friends so femme? When it comes to car repair, I always say “never send a man to do a lesbian’s job” but none of my lesbian friends know their carburetor from their elbow.
I went to see the “Ribbon of Life” show this weekend. It’s an annual AIDS fundraiser in Las Vegas where over 200 performers from The Strip put together special acts for one weekend only. I was sadly disappointed with this year’s offering. The hosts, Tony and Llyod, were funny, but they went on far too long between half-assed dance numbers. My good friend Tyler Field did an awesome job as the Emcee from the opening number of Cabaret, as did the cast of Celine Dion’s A New Day in their tribute to same-sex marriage advocates in “Over the Rainbow” (Celine herself didn’t appear, but she taped the song for her dancers to perform), but quality performances were few and far between. The most pitiful numbers were a tribute to Donna Summer hits and a tribute to Steven Schwartz. I know it’s a good cause and all, but with the kind of money they’re asking people to fork out for tickets, they need to put together a much better show in the future. My advice would be more variety (there were 3 dance numbers to each vocal offering), a faster-paced show, and fewer tired in-jokes. Also, since well over half of the audience was comprised of gay men, do you think we could find more hot men for the show? I realize the showgirls (and showboys) are donating their volunteer time to the cause, but I know I was bored seeing so much T&A after the first three numbers.
I made even more progress on my novel over the weekend. After some interesting conversations I’ve had lately, a lot of things just started to click. I need to build more internal group conflict, though. All the characters have become way too huggy-feely with each other.
Thank goddess we’re almost finished with next month’s issue of the magazine. Things are way too tense and bitchy around here. My publisher suffered a personal tragedy over the weekend, though, so I’m trying to hold shit together here on her behalf while she’s in Arizona. My thoughts and prayers will be with her tonight.
