Bad Democrat.
Thursday, July 29th, 2004Maybe I’m a bad Democrat, but I just couldn’t pay attention through John Edward’s speech yesterday. After all the hype I was hearing about how lawyers would come into the courtroom to hear him address the jury during his days as a trial lawyer, I was expecting something more persuasive.
His speech seemed rather centrist to me, and that just doesn’t appeal. I know we’re trying to win a popular vote here, but I am Pat Robertson’s nightmare. I am a gay, Wicca, vegetarian, pro-choice, feminist, ACLU-member, environmentalist, extreme Liberal (with the capital “L”). I am the “base” of the party. I am the guy who voted for Nader because Gore didn’t reflect enough of my values – and I don’t regret it – and I’ll do it again this year because I’m going to be living in Utah (which is so heavily Republican that my vote isn’t going to “cost us the election”).
I’m also tired of news reports on how the news reports on the conventions… Tonight on Dateline, we take a look at the news coverage devoted to explaining the news coverage of the election year. Is the media’s fascination with reporting on itself going to far?
Watched the premier of Amish in the City last night. I’m sure a large part of it is editing, but I can’t believe how difficult it is for the city kids to recognize how monumental a change this is for the Amish people. I’m also a little surprised that there hasn’t been any real tension over the issue of sexual orientation. I mean, Reese is super-gay and the Amish are still pretty religious. I have to say, the show is dispelling some notions I had about Amish people – they seem to know a lot about city life, even if they grew up in Amish country. I guess they aren’t as insular as I’d always believed.
Anyway, I hope Kerry’s speech tonight is more interesting than Edward’s. I want something to fire me up, give me a clear image of who he is, and feel included in the party.
