Friday, September 3rd, 2004So after work yesterday, I decided to take a little trip to the nearest comic book store (which I discovered when I was looking for “Fray”) to finally pick up Joss Whedon’s first couple of issues of “Astonishing X-Men.” Really, it was meant to be an innocent little trip.
Now, I should mention that I’ve never really been into comics. I love Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman” series, but that only happened because it came so very highly recommended by so many online friends. When I was young, 6 – 10 years old, I did like to read my dad’s old comics, but never really got into the stories much and dumped them altogether when I discovered “Dragonlance” at age 11.
During my last trip home, I ended up reading some of Dad’s “Daredevil” graphic novels to get a better understanding of the movie. But when it came to the big names (i.e. Spiderman, Superman, Batman, etc.) I never really found them very interesting.
The big exception being X-Men. From the television cartoon to video games, movies to whatever, I’ve always loved the X-Men. But I’ve also stayed away from the actual comics.
Which is why yesterday was such a bad idea. In defense of my purchasing willpower, I only bought one graphic novel in one series (Uncanny X-Men: Hope. … because that’s where we get Northstar and I love my gay mutant). But today’s payday and what’s the difference if I just buy just one more? Really, I can stop after one more book. Or two. I’ll be good and save the rest of my money for imporant things like moving…
*clears throat nervously* Hi, my name is Tyreseus and I’m about to become a comic book addict.
(And to cap it all off, after reading Astonishing 1-4, and Uncanny: Hope, I had to get another fix by watching X2 on DVD until 2 am.)
I’m also seriously wondering if I could write a good comic story? It’s a challenge I’d like to try someday if I can find a good illustrator to work with.

[...] X-Men came out today. It’s hard to believe that this story arc I’ve been reading for three and a half years, the very book that brought me back to comic books (curse you Joss Whedon!), is over. The final [...]
