You’ve probably forgotten who I am by now, but I’m back online (finally).

I’m the new editor of Salt Lake Metro newspaper (the state’s newest and fastest growing GLBT paper). This is a friends-only entry because their old editor hasn’t shown up to work in three days and doesn’t know he’s been replaced yet (although after missing three days of work, no one thinks he’s going to be terribly surprised).

Anyway, the pay isn’t great, but it’ll do for now. The company has enormous potential for growth and I expect that will begin very soon.

I interviewed yet again with Sundance yesterday and they told me that they needed 3-5 more weeks before they would make a final decision about the position they were considering me for. I couldn’t wait that long. My supply of cash is dwindling rather quickly. It’s probably for the best anyway. I’m not actually changing careers, just companies.

Today has been mostly about learning their workflow, systems and meeting the staff. I’ll post more about the people I work with as I get to know them better, but everyone has been really friendly so far. I think this is going to be an excellent fit. The office space is amazingly more comfortable than my old office and so far, I prefer their workflow to the one we used in Vegas. Makes more sense.

The specifics of my job are more clearly defined as well. I won’t be doing art direction (at least, not for a while), nor any of the thousand other random tasks I used to do in Vegas (such as distribution, event planning, graphic design, etc.). I’ll be in charge of setting and gathering the editorial content (imagine that). I do know they’re paying out too much for stories that can be written in house. Hopefully, I can get at least 1-3 stories (especially news briefs) per day accomplished in house and save some money. I want to make some big changes to the type of content as well, but our publisher has asked me to conduct a reader survey before making any big changes. I’m okay with that.

Salt Lake Metro is celebrating their 6 month anniversary (they are that new) with this next issue (lucky #13). It’s a biweekly paper and I’m not looking forward to doing that again (we switched from biweekly to monthly in Vegas last April). On the other hand, I was doing a 80+ pages biweekly and handling the art direction in Vegas. Metro is only 24 pages at the moment and I’m more specifically focused this time. I have a feeling it’s going to be a walk in the park comparatively.

Well, the new job comes with the perk of high-speed internet access once again, so expect me to try catching up on my flist soon and making my presence generally known once more.
