Tuesday, November 16th, 2004Wow, so it’s been a week since I last posted. Things got crazy busy all of a sudden. The post-election issue of the paper was a lot more difficult than I expected, largely because there were just so many interesting things to comment on. Our cover story analyzed where the money came from in the state of Utah to campaign for the anti-gay marriage amendment. Most of it came from a mysterious non-profit group which took advantage of a loophole in the campaign finance reporting laws to make the majority of their large donors anonymous. Shady.
Anyway, my sister Joanna got “officially” engaged to the guy she’s been dating for, like, three minutes. He’s a “return missionary” – every Mormon girl’s dream. I guess he’s a nice enough guy, but I’m going to have to deal with his homophobia before I have another strained relationship in the family.
I volunteered to join the board of directors for the local GLBT community center. They’re kind of a mess right now in terms of policy, procedure and organization – which is my volunteer area of expertise. They also took on the responsibility of producing Utah Gay Pride a few years ago and I understand that they’re bleeding money on it right now. Well, I haven’t been involved with gay pride organizations since 1997 to stand by and let that continue.
I’m also going to see if I can revive my church’s chapter of “Interweave,” the GLBT outreach group for Unitarian Universalists. Not sure why I agreed to do this, but at least I’m finally starting to get out there in Salt Lake.
I’m also looking for a second job. Since my job at the paper is techinally only part time, I figured it would be a really good idea to pick up a retail position through the holiday season. That was part of the craziness last week, I was spending every morning at the mall putting in applications. I haven’t heard anything back, yet, but I can do more later this week.
Sunday night we sponsored a special screening of the movie “Testosterone.” It was presented by the Human Rights Campaign and Queer Lounge. Queer Lounge is a part of the Sundance Film Festival where GLBT filmmakers and patrons can mingle and discuss our issues in relation to the films. We just signed on as the local media sponsors for it, so I’ll be heading up to Park City through the last part of January to attend and cover Sundance. I’m excited about that.
I have tickets to the touring production of The Producers tonight and I’m not sure if I’m going to make it. I was up really early this morning for a Utah AIDS Foundation fundraiser breakfast. It’s a slow work day, but I’m already feeling tired and ready to go home.
Is it considered cyber-stalking if you accidentally find naked pictures of someone you know on the internet and then look around for more? I ran across some pics of one of my writers the other day and just by following a few links, I found a whole lot of naked pictures of him. Now I feel really awkward when I talk to him, wondering if I should casually bring it up or not. Clearly, he’s not the kind of person who’s shy about posing for the photos, but I don’t know him well enough to know how he’d react to his “boss” finding those pictures. I’ll probably just keep on pretending I never saw them, it’s the safe route.
Anyway, that’s a brief peek at the wacky fun I’ve had over the last week. I promise I’m not getting tired of LJ and dissappearing.
