The Whys and Wherefores
Saturday, November 20th, 2004Ganked from just about everyone on my flist
My journal is called _____ because _____.
My subtitle is _____ because _____.
My friends page is called _____ because _____.
My username is ____ because _____.
My default userpic is _____ because_____.
My Journal is called Tyreseus because it’s my username and I wasn’t feeling wildly original when last I renamed it.
My subtitle is Blind Prophecies because of the connection to the mythological character from whom I take my username. Also, there are times when I feel like I “see” things coming that no one else sees. Not mystical prophecy, just pattern and trend recognition.
My friends page is called akolouthos because I was feeling pretentious and started looking up the Latin or Greek roots of words that related to the theme I had going on. “akolouthos” is the root of the word “acolytes.” Again, pretentious to indicate that my friends are the acolytes to my prophet, but the old name of my friends page was “Adoring Fans” and that was just as bad. I figure that most people aren’t actually reading my blog from my blog (they’re reading it from their flists) so how many people actually notice what it’s called anyway?
My username is tyreseus mostly because I’ve always felt drawn to the character from Greek mythology by the same name. I’ve explained this elsewhere (and the story of “Tiresias” is related on the homepage of my blog) but ever since I started trying to unravel T.S. Eliot’s “The Wasteland” in high school – where I was struck by the passage about Tiresias – I’ve been fascinated to see him pop up in various pieces of literature and I’ve studied him more and more.
My default userpic is actually a picture of me with a blindfold and the words “Blind Prophecy” because I wanted my first userpic to specifically reflect the themes I had going in the blog. I may be one of only a handful of LJers who actually uses a real picture of themselves, but when I deliberately leave the default icon up, it’s to remind myself to be honest about the real me in this space.
