Whoo! and Hoo!

It took stopping in two different comic stores yesterday (the first one sold out), but I got my hands on a fresh copy of Astonishing X-Men #7. I love this man, Joss Whedon. May he live to be twice the age of Stephen King and three times as famous/wealthy/happy!

That said, here come some spoilers!

First off, the big question lingering question is whether Wing killed himself or if he was murdered. The official blurb on Marvel.com says that the tragic death reveals a powerful enemy living among the X-Men and I have to wonder “who?” I suppose they want us to suspect Emma Frost, but I don’t buy it. Perhaps Colossus has been brainwashed or something, but I’m not sure about that either. My current theory is that Hisako is working for Agent Brand. She was the last one seen with Wing, and her parting line almost goads him into suicide.

And… Blindfold! She’s the River/Drusilla/BtVS:S5-crazy-people of the X-Men. Her dramatic appearance is fantastic… “He cannot leave, yes, thank you. I like him well. I ache and worse. If he goes away then, no, thnak you. Then the new one will come.” As she removes her blindfold and reveals the skin covered sockets where eyes should be. Combined with the shawl and the straight black hair, I can almost hear Drusilla’s voice on the page.

It seems like there’s a glut of psychics at the mansion right now… Emma Frost, her cuckoos (who creep me out more than a little), Blindfold… and the Breakworld plot centers around precog visions of the future. Xavier would just be overkill at this point.

Other episode highlights… X-Men versus Godzilla? Scott’s plan to act more like traditional heroes is playing out, with a helpful guest appearance from the Fab 4.

Colossus’s disorientation and numbness about being back reminds me of Season 6 Buffy. And as both Kitty and Peter dwell on the weirdness of their situation, Wolverine spends a similar amount of time (in battle) to come up with the profound thought, “I really like beer.”

I saw some hilarious scans for the Cable and Deadpool title over at , so I picked up the first trade paperback as well. I think I’m going to like that series as well.
