New Astonishing X-Men (#8)

Friday, February 18th, 2005

So, since I’m spending all my free time lifting and carrying heavy things, I thought I deserved a reward. Luckily for me, Astonishing X-Men #8 is in stores this week.

I opened up to the first spread and was very confused. I didn’t know what was going on, how much time had passes – anything. It turns out that no time had passed since the last episode, the “enemy within the mansion” has just tipped ‘her’ hand and things are happening rather unexpectedly. Although Whedon didn’t reveal that enemy until the last page.

“Dangerous” – ha ha – I get it now. The Danger Room is angry.

I was right – Hisako didn’t kill Wing.

Okay, but… Who are “Grace” and “Anna” (from Brand’s tattoos)? Who is Agent Brand’s “mole?” Who was speaking to Emma Frost in her coma? Is it the same person from the end of #6? It seems too obvious to make Emma a traitor… a cold-hearted bitch, certainly, but Marvel has worked so hard over the past few years to get everyone past that whole “used-to-be-evil” stuff. I expect better from Whedon. Why can Kitty still communicate with Lockheed? Is it really a matter of instinct instead of telepahy?

Oh no. No no no no! I’m starting to get a tingly feeling in my gut that Joss is about to challenge everything we think we know about cute little Shadowkat. I have no direct evidence, but… okay, well, she could have programmed the danger room, she’s the one alone with all the kids, and she’s the one who has the least reason to trust the gang (if she suspects Emma’s manipulating them).

Squee-worthy things in A-X-men 8: Wolverine remembering why Cyclops is still in charge… lots of action this issue… “Summers? Really?”… the sentinel beam shedding Colossus’s clothes around the steel skin… Lockheed’s “lights” on the lawn… a surprise threat that seems totally obvious in retrospect but no one saw coming… four more issues in this arc!

I don’t wanna wait until the end of March for my next issue. The wait between issues is as bad as the WB’s programming schedule for Angel from Dec-Feb.
