Shocking News

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

I got a chance to catch up with Nick from Vegas for a while this morning. While we talked, I learned two shocking pieces of news that are hard to cope with. You know have we all have those casual friendships that we never give much thought to, but we notice them when they’re gone?

This is Brian on the first day I met him. At the time he was a “tooter boy” (selling shots) at FreeZone. He was friendly, gorgeous and always a decent guy to me. I know he had his problems, but I never had a bad word to say about him.

We were friends outside the bar, too, hanging out a few times in other venues. After he left FreeZone, though, he dropped off the radar for a while and we lost touch.

Apparently, a few months ago, his brand new roommate shot him in the chest and killed him. No one could tell me what that was about or knows anything else about the incident.

This is PJ, also a bartender (and manager) at FreeZone. I’ve known PJ since 2000, and he’s one of those steady friends who is always there when you need him. I met him during the whole Sasha Scarlett era, and for almost 5 years, no matter what was going on in my life, he always remembered that I drink Captain and Diet, andalways listened with afriendly ear.

Sure, that’s the job of a bartender, but I genuinely thought of PJ as a friend, and I’m really glad that the last time we saw each other (during Vegas Pride last May) he took the time to give me a hug despite the super-crowded, super-busy line at the bar.

Recently, he was leaving work on his motorcycle and was hit by a drunk driver. He’s still in the hospital.

Quote of the Day: “So, with a new infatuation I went to the local Borders at 9AM without dancing to Britney Spears in my underwear, a normal Sunday rite.”
