LaVar Christensen – give it a rest already.

I hate writing about this case, but it’s in the news again. It’s been in the Tribune, and now it’s showing up in the Deseret Morning News. (I’ve had bad experiences bringing this topic up – it’s apparently quite controversial in the community because all the lesbians in Salt Lake know at least one of the two women involved).

2 mom’s battle has legal issues.

Last year, Metro readers voted Chris Buttars as Utah’s “Most anti-gay politician.” Apparently, LaVar Christensen is bitter about it and is campaigning extra hard this year. Check out this story

Lawmaker working on a bill to ensure parental rights

Rep. LaVar Christensen sees a case before the Utah Supreme Court as a potential crisis for parental rights.

Christensen, R-Sandy, says a trial judge overstepped his bounds when he used a common law concept to give Keri Lynn Jones visitation rights to Cheryl Pike Barlow’s daughter — against Barlow’s wishes.

So, Christensen said he’s working on drafting a bill that would make clear that a biological, adoptive or marital relationship must exist before a fit parent can be subject to court-ordered visitation.

I really don’t know where to begin with this guy. Last week, he’s threatening legislation if Rocky Anderson gives medical benefits to the partners of gay and lesbian employees. This week, he’s threatening legislation if the courts find that same-gender partners have parental rights. He’s an outspoken opponent to anything that looks the least bit beneficial for queer folks and I wonder if he’d even have a political career if it wasn’t for being a high-profile bigot.
