I can’t believe it.
Wednesday, August 31st, 2005Okay, so I’ve been something of a N’orleans-o-phile for several years. I think it was a combination of Anne Rice books, some stunning documentaries, stories from friends about Mardi Gras, and other books set in the Big Easy. I’ve been hoping to plan a trip to Mardi Gras for several years now.
I almost went ot college in New Orleans. I was accepted to two universities on scholarship. UNR offered a slightly better deal. Part of me has always regretted (a little bit) not going to University of New Orleans.
At least part of my fascination has been the documentaries I’ve seen about how N.O. is existing “on borrowed time” because of the levees and areas of the city below sea level.
I’m hearing on the news that it could be 6 months before they get all the water out. Even then, there’s the problems of disease, vast structural damage, clean-up, etc.
The news is giving contradictory information about damage and death counts, but if I understand the situation correctly, New Orleans – as it used to be, as I think of it – is no more. Historical sites will have been ruined, people (especially lower class folks without the ability or desire to leave) will not survive, and I’m guessing that Mardi Gras isn’t going to be quite the same.
