Bon Yule! (and Nip/Tuck thoughts)
Wednesday, December 21st, 2005Happy Winter Solstice! (a.k.a. Yule)
So, many things to report and discuss (some of which will have to wait until it’s “legal” to comment on them). Things have been truckin’ along at Bob’s Event and I’m feeling really positive about it. Next week threatens to be a bitch, though, because the graphic design firm we work with in L.A. will be on holiday, leaving us to handle everything internally.
Speaking of Graphic Design firms that are helping out with Bob’s Event, at the beginning of each film we screen, we always show a short little trailer that promotes our little festival. This year, those trailers were created by a company named Digitalkitchen. While I can’t share the actual trailers we’re using, this company also created the opening credits for shows such as Six Feet Under, Stephen King’s Kingdom Hospital and Nip/Tuck. They are amazing! Go to their website and watch some of the stuff in the “Entertainment” category and you’ll get an idea of how cool the trailers we’re using are.
And since I brought up Nip/Tuck (how’s that for a segue?)…
So, I’m not nearly as surprised as many other people seem to be that it was Quentin. What threw me (but not much) was that Kit was his accomplice and sister. I mean, I’m willing to accept a lot of crazy coincidences on this show, but the fact that the lead investigator on the case (a foreign import at that) was never subject to a more thorough background check seems a little far fetched. Just as far-fetched is the idea that our good doctors, upon discovering the truth, wouldn’t be able to convince any of their police officer buddies (federal or local) to reopen the case.
Thank goddess Matt finally became a respectable human being again. I haven’t actually liked him all season until last night. I’m not buying his turnaround, though, because he’s still never confessed or made penance for the hit-and-run from the first season. Last night, he was party to killing a man (with ample justification), but is apparently covering it up instead of telling the truth to his family. Matt has a disturbing pattern of thinking that if everything looks good on the outside, it’s fine and he’s made things right. His request for Sean to reconstruct Cherry’s face is symptomatic of a larger issue – which is also reflected in the Kimber/Christian break-up scene. Fixing the outside doesn’t fix the inside. Well, I guess it’s an old theme of the show by now.
I got into a stupid pissing match with the local community’s most vocal malcontent over the weekend. Damn yahoogroups and their ease of use for angry ranting. Anyway, I don’t know whether to be pissed off or flattered that he’s interested enough in making my life hell that he’s threatening to dig up dirt or old skeletons in the closet from my time in Las Vegas or Reno. ::sigh:: A part of me wishes I had enough free time to keep fighting with him. Unlike this guy, however, I have actual work to do and I can’t afford the luxury of hanging around waiting to stir up shit.
Oh, it seems I may be speaking on a panel next week about Brokeback Mountain. The film is going to open in SLC on December 30 (with a midnight screening no less) and sometime that day Sam Wellers is planning to host a panel discussion on the film. I’ve been asked to speak because of my position at Bob’s Event (which is really no credential at all) but also because I’ve been forwarding this article (posted in *-*-*buffyannotater”>’s LJ by *-*-*londonkds”>) to all my friends. Anyway, that probably means I’ll be seeing that midnight screening of BBM on the 30th. That’s the closest thing I’ve got to exciting New Year’s plans. If it all comes together, I’ll post the time and details.
