Reflections on 2005

Friday, December 30th, 2005

Firsts in 2005:

  • Attended the Sundance Film Festival
  • Attended the Utah Burn – a regional version of Burning Man
  • Purchased items online (other than plane tickets or website subscriptions) with my very own credit card
  • Dug a grave for a beloved pet (instead of letting a vet take care of the remains)

Places visited in 2005:

  • San Francisco, CA
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Wendover, NV
  • Park City, UT
  • Los Angeles, CA

Things I’m proud of in 2005:

  • A year without having the S-E-X
  • Utah Pride Festival
  • 9 months at Salt Lake Metro
  • Taking a risk and accepting a job with the Sundan Bob’s Event
  • Caring for my family during my father’s medical crisis
  • Donations made in the wake of Katrina
  • Helping to organize over a dozen events for the GLBT community
  • Participating in peace rallies
  • Taught a “Welcoming Congregation” class at church to address GLBT issues

Things I (sorta) regret about 2005:

  • Not taking more risks with my personal life
  • Failing to quit smoking
  • Not being able to overcome personality and philosophical differences with my brother-in-law
  • Gaining more weight
  • Not learning how to ski
  • Not making it to my friend Melissa’s wedding
  • Not taking more time for spiritual and personal growth
  • Not saving more money (but I’m proud of my generosity toward charitable causes and with my family during the holidays)

Top five memorable moments of 2005:

  • Seeing the Scissor Sisters perform during the Sundance Film Festival in a concert put on by Queer Lounge at Club Suede.
  • Watching the sun come up as they hoisted the rainbow flag alongside the American flag for Pride week celebrations – my own private moment of ritual to begin the day.
  • Applying whip cream speedos to boys participating in the Mr. Gay Wendover contest.
  • Running around the burning effigy at the Utah Burn wearing naught but my sandals.
  • Holding my brothers and speaking on their behalf (they couldn’t speak through the pain) as we said “goodbye” to Dad around his hospital bed, only to have him wake up a few minutes later and start talking to us.

Milestones in 2005:

  • Two sisters got married
  • Two sisters got pregnant
  • Lost two long-time family dogs, Jedda and Johnny
  • Moved into a new house
  • New job in a somewhat different field
