Q Salt Lake
Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006So, this e-mail didn’t precisely come as a surprise or anything (I’ve known for several days now), but it was interesting…
Today I tendered my resignation from Metro Publishing, Inc. and Salt Lake Metro. Without going into great detail, I did so because of ethical differences with my business partner at the Metro as well as his lack of performance in making Salt Lake Metro a financial success.
I am very proud of what we were able to do with Salt Lake Metro, especially with the extremely limited resources (much of which came from my pocket) that we had to work with. The editorial and production teams worked extremely hard to produce a newspaper that Utah’s gay and lesbian community could be proud of.
I am happy to announce a newspaper that carries the soul of Salt Lake Metro–its writers and production staff. Q Salt Lake will launch in March, publishing twice monthly the Wednesday on or before the 1st and 15th.

So, big shake-up in SLC’s gay community. I’m working on a story for Michael’s first issue. Michael already spoke to Kelly at QVegas to make sure she wouldn’t be upset about the similarity in names. She was okay with it. In fact, I think it would be great if the two of them could find ways to work together in the future.
Meanwhile, our state legislature is out of control. In yesterday’s paper, I read that they declined a bill requiring everyone in a car to buckle up (“it should be a matter of individual choice”), set aside a bill that would have made it a felony to stand by while someone is overdosing, but approved (in seperate houses) two bills aimed at limiting or curtailing gay-straight alliance groups in public schools and are still considering another which (though highly likely to be found unconstitutional) would make it a crime to distribute video games with “unnecessary violence” to minors. I hate these people.
Things are moving faster with Utah Pride now. I think the fact that I’m keeping regular hours now is helping pick up the pace of things. I wonder how much I can get accomplished before I leave.
Had my final evaluation with my supervisor at Bob’s Event this morning. She had nothing but positive things to say. In fact, she sort of got me worked up about taking some risks and applying to some quality marketing/PR/advertising agencies. I’ve been updating my resume off and on for the last few hours and I think I’m going to devote some time to serious job hunting this week. Rather than reacting, I need to take some active steps in my career, and this is probably the best time to do it.
Update: So I’ve just sent my resume to a few large PR/Marketing firms. Okay, I admit it, my first round of job hunting began with San Francisco, but I promise that I’ll be looking at more options tomorrow – just not in Salt Lake.
