Subject: Utah Pride director calls legal firearms ‘white-trash’A year after being forced to back down from an unenforceable and potentially illegal firearms ban, Utah Pride director Jere Keys wrote on April 29 at his weblog:
“There is a flier posted up on the entrances to my local Wal*Mart that reads: ‘All Firearms Instock On Sale 10% Off.’ Say what you want about gun control issues, but I don’t want to live in a country where WallyWorld is selling all their ‘Instock’ guns at discounted rates and they’re advertising this with crappy black-and-white ‘fresh off the office copier’ fliers taped to the door. I’ve never felt more white-trash in my life than walking through those doors….”

Let’s review: There’s nothing illegal about Wal-Mart Stores Inc. selling firearms. Company staffers are free to supply firearms, price them, advertise them, sell them and even give them away if their customers are legally able to own them. Company staffers are proud to be “the local store of choice when it comes to purchasing sporting goods merchandise and equipment, including firearms.”
The company has consistently earned accolades for business diversity from their customers who are disabled, black, Hispanic, Asian, and U.S. service members and their families. The Human Rights Campaign ranks the company as average and equal to the diversity demonstrated by such Utah businesses as Costco Wholesale, Kroger Smith’s and Sam’s Club.
So, I wonder whether Jere would be as careless about his opinion if the Wal-Mart sign had read “All Assistive Devices for People With Disabilities Instock On Sale 10% Off.” Would he have felt as “white-trash” for having to see a sale on tobacco and beer products which are far more abused and deadly than firearms?
A lot of gay Utahns own and use firearms. We do it legally. It’s time our Utah Pride leaders stop dehumanizing us with their opinions and start including us with their actions.

The reply I typed up twice and deleted twice because it is a mistake to engage this asshole every time:
Wow. Are you so desperate to draw attention to your narrow agenda that you must resort now to attacking my personal opinions on this subject? Am I not allowed to have a firmly held and deeply entrenched opinion about gun control just because you disagree with it?
Goddess, the hypocrisy. Sorry, David, but my personal blog has always been a reflection of my personal opinions. When I post something on the Utah Pride website calling gun owner names, then you can complain. Until then, you need to respect my right to free speech and stop trying to play the poor persecuted victim here because I have a PERSONAL opinion on this subject.
Or can’t you come up with a topic that actually merits a press release this week?
By the way, I find it interesting that just days after you showed up in the comments section of my blog, I started recieving extremely racist and heterosexist hate mail–which bordered on threats–from your friends in the Utah Minutemen.
Honestly, this whole thing is making me sick. Where is it written that because I’ve taken on a leadership position in the community, I must now renounce any opinions of my own?
More to the point that’s making me nauseous, is my blog now an open target for any malcontent eager to cause me problems?
I need some advice, my friends. Typically, I tend to avoid the “friends-only” blogs on LJ, but I’m tempted to move to a permanent f-lock for a while. That’s unfortunate, because I do have some RL friends who are not on LiveJournal who read this. Thoughts? Has anyone found themselves being attacked in RL for things they’ve posted online and how did you deal with it? I don’t want to censor myself from having opinions, but I simply don’t have the time to deal with this kind of distraction right now.

Ha. So JereKeys.com grew up too, at one point.
