Dive Bars and Abandonment Issues
Thursday, June 22nd, 2006So, Jessica called me up and convinced me that I needed to go out to a bar last night. So I met up with her and her friends Hillary, Jay and Matt at the Eagle’s Tavern. Jesica has this fascination with dive bars – “it looks wonderfully shitty” she said. Eagle’s Tavern is a levi/leather gay bar not far from our ‘hood. Since Jesica lives just 4 blocks from me, I met her at her house and we started walking. Eventually the bus came by and we rode the last 6 blocks.
I think Eagle’s Tavern is more patio than bar, which allowed us plenty of space to smoke. By smoke, I don’t mean cigarettes this time. I’ve been in the city 3 days and I’ve already been offered pot a dozen times. This never happened in SLC and rarely in Vegas.
Anyway, we had a good time hanging out, although as I’ve mentioned here before, the bear and leather scene has never particularly appealed to me. Matt and I had a lot in common. He moved here about 10 years ago after being co-chair of some important group back in Nebraska (during the Brandon Teena time). After feeling like a “big fish in a little pond” (his words), he was glad to take a break and get away and become a private citizen again. He told me that the guilt of “walking away” from a community that “needs you” goes away after a few months.
We also went for pizza at Bowzers Pizza. Jessica and I split a Pesto Presto pizza (which was delicious) while the rest of the gang made fun of us for still thinking food in S.F. with pesto and sun-dried tomatoes was nummy. After pizza and beer, Jessica and I ended up walking the entire way home and I had my first “wandering around my neighborhood after dark” experience. Not at all the terrifying and dangerous activity my parents and others have been trying to convince me it would be. Also, in an (apparently) really rare occurance, it was beautifully warm all night and no jackets were required.
So I’m working on laundry this morning, then I may do a trip to the gym this afternoon. Otherwise, not a lot going on today except more exploring.
