The Prestige

We went to see The Prestige tonight. Love Christian Bale. Not so impressed with Wolverine, er, um, Hugh Jackman.

Jennifer pointed out that the movie might have been more interesting if they hadn’t given away all the tricks at the end. If they’d just left it at the hats and the many, many water tanks without having to actually spell it all out for us. That way people would have walked out of the theatre debating whether or not it happened the way it happened. Still, many clever elements. Even though I suspected the diaries were misdirection and the Fallon-as-hidden-twist was telegraphed a mile away, I loved the way they played both things out.

Here’s a question, though. At what point did Cutter (Michael Caine) switch loyalties? It seemed obvious to me that it happened at the end, when he grasped how monsterous Angier had become. But then Daniel pointed out that it was Cutter who sent Angier to see Tesla at the show. Could Cutter have been setting him up for Borden’s game? It seems a bit far-fetched to me, but I can’t be sure.

I wonder how this movie will hold up on second viewing, when the things like Sarah’s keying into Borden’s declarations of love (“not today”) as a hint to the dual personalites, are already understood.

Anyway, I liked it a lot and reccomend it to all my friends.

It was such a beautifully sunny day today. I found a Halloween costume in Upper Haight, we shopped for a while, it was fun.
