Quick note on Santa Day Eve-ish
Monday, December 25th, 2006Everyone’s in bed for at least 4 more hours, but I’m trying to download pics off my camera so there’s plenty of room on the memory chip tomorrow.
I went to the SVUUS service tonight, and that was awesome. It was so great to see so many friends and (as usual) a great service that put me firmly into the season. Even if I can’t get behind the Christian story, Rev. Sean used the story to remind us how every birth, every new child, is a miracle.
Big extended family party at my uncle’s house was interesting. Joanna and Brandon were there and left minutes after I arrived. Big surprise. My extended family did a great job of asking about my life in SF and my new job, but they couldn’t quite keep their eyes from glazing over when I actually answered them. I think, however, that they were genuinely impressed that I’ve been able to move my career in a direction they can understand, and I can speak their “language” of business and management more fluently now.
I find it very funny how they all react, though, when I insisted on wishing them all a happy Kwanzaa. Finally one of my cousins admitted that they had no idea what Kwanzaa was and another cousin suggested that it was holiday for Native Americans. Does it hurt to live in such a WASPy little corner of the universe?
We did the Santa Day Eve ritual of opening one gift each then made for bed. My gift was one of those matroyshka dolls painted with “famous” Russian authors. I didn’t recognize any of the names, but I’ll wiki them later. I’m afraid that the only famous Russian authors I could think of were Tolstoy, Chekov and Dostoevsky… none of whom were on the nested dolls.
