Maker Faire and Bay to Breakers 2007

Monday, May 21st, 2007

This weekend was filled with fun in the sun, not all of it intentional. And in what is becoming something of a tradition for me, I’ll recap with photos! Some days I’m starting to think that my flickr photo stream tells you more about me than my LJ.

Saturday began with a difficult-to-coordinate trip to San Mateo for the Maker Faire. The weather was trying to decide if it wanted to be warm or cool, but just to be sure, Jessica brought along the fat-free water. It didn’t taste as good as the full-flavor (fat included) version, but it did the job of keeping her hydrated.

Fat Free Water

We rode CalTrain to San Mateo, but foolishly did not verify which stop we were supposed to use. We ended up getting off a full 2 stops before our destination. Since the train only runs every hour, we decided to hoof it. Along the way we encountered a frightening glimpse of suburbia, complete with manicured lawns (what a waste of space, you could build 4 apartments in that lot!), a bar called “Casbah” (me: “why don’t we just stop walking and Rock the Casbah instead?” Daniel: “Take it back, don’t go there.” Me: “But, I just made the completely original joke that’s never been used before!”), and this place….

Yuppie Bar, with Jazzercise!

Oh yes, “Yuppie Bar” … complete with a Jazzercise studio above!

After almost an hour-long trek through suburbia, we finally arrived at our desitnation! Maker’s Faire is sorta the world fair of geekery. I’d been expecting a lot more artsy-crafty type stuff, but it turned out to be a lot more Burning-Man-meets-Battlebots-meets-hipster-twentysomethings-who-knit-and-make-strange-stuffed-animals.

At the end of the Maker’s Faire, we needed to catch the train back to the City, but arrived 5 minutes after the (hourly) train had passed. So, we went to TGI Fridays near the stop and had drinks that taste like ice cream but get you fucked up and foods none of us had eaten in a while (i.e. buffalo wings, potato skins, mozzerella sticks – we’ve been spoiled by San Francisco restaurants).

After all that, we talked about going to see 28 Weeks Later, but would have had to catch the really late show (11:30 p.m.) and that would probably impact our ability to wake up for Bay to Breakers.

Sunday’s weather for Bay to Breakers was less ambivalent. It was warm. This is good because it encouraged many sexy boys to strip down. I arrived at the panhandle at about 9:30 and, frankly, I’m amazed at how many people were trashed drunk so early in the day. I met up with Jennifer, Daniel, Jenna, Ken and Diggs a little later in the morning. After a few hours of watching B2B, we split up. Ken and Jenna wanted to walk all the way to the ocean. Jennifer and Daniel wanted to take Diggs home. I just wanted to eat, but I walked with Jennifer and Daniel, then we all grabbed some lunch at Flippers. Since we were so close, we walked over to Isotope Comics, which led to a trip to Al’s Comics as well, making for a rather long and full day of mostly walking in the sun.

You can see all 120 photos I took at B2B (including a few NSFW ones) at my Flickr set.

I ended Sunday by watching the season finale of Desperate Housewives (okay) and Brothers & Sisters (love it!). I’m a bit sunburned from the weekend and I have freckles popping up on my nose and across the top of my head (where other people might have a hairline).

I think we all agreed that next year we definately want to participate in Bay to Breakers rather than just watching it.

ETA: Damn! So much code… so many opportunities for errors. I think I got it all straightened out. My apologies if I did something wonky to your flist in the meantine.
