Weekly Personal Update
Friday, March 27th, 2009I’ve had a busy week. After so many weeks of underemployment, it’s a refreshing change, although I do sort of miss the aimless, unstructured day. I won’t have many of them again for a long time after this summer.
In order to make my final decision about law schools, I’ve spent the last few days checking out my credit history and making a really stark assessment of my resources. After making a lot of really bad decisions during and immediately after college, I’ve paid off all my credit card debt (and lived without a credit card for years – when you don’t have access to credit, you have to live within your means) and stayed on time with my student loan payments. More significantly, since more than 7 years have passed since most of my bad financial decisions, most of them have been wiped from my credit reports. As a result, I apparently have “excellent” credit. No one is more surprised than me. I’ve spent so long thinking of myself as a person who is bad with money, I didn’t even realize I was actually doing okay. Of course, I don’t really have any savings or retirement plan, so I still can’t claim to be the smartest guy in the room.
Anyway, the point is that all options are on the table. If I decide to go to the school that will incur the most student loan debt, I should at least qualify for the best interest rates rather than having to take high-risk loans. I expect to make a decision in the next week.
Teaching is going well. I enjoy my classes and keeping a schedule again.
Not much more going on in my life right now. Despite all three of us working right now, unexpected money woes have hit our household this month, so we’ve been tightening the belt and learning how far we can stretch a buck (or a case of ramen). I know it has been stressful for Jennifer and Jacob, so I’m trying to be extra helpful when I can.
