Kiss the Cook

Warning: this is a boring diary-like post about my day. It’s not witty or political or interesting. If you want entertainment, go visit Polt’s blog where I had a much more adventurous day in that “My hed iz pastede on yay!” sort of way.

Since I had the day off, I spent much of yesterday being terribly domestic. I scrubbed down the kitchen (to kill the swine flu! It was coming for me!) then spent the entire evening cooking.

The funny thing is, I barely tasted anything I cooked. This morning kicked off week 4 of my diet/exercise plan and after 3 full weeks of counting calories and making daily trips to the gym (except weekends when it’s closed), I’ve dropped 6 pounds.

Anyway, while cleaning, I noticed several things in the cupboard and fridge about to go bad, and both Jen and Jacob were working long days on little sleep the previous night. I figured it would be nice to prepare some meals that can be reheated quickly and on the go.

The first thing I did after getting home from the gym was make myself a 3-egg-whites omelette and after 2 weeks of trying to master the skill, it actually ended up looking like an omelette instead of some kind of egg scramble.

Bolstered by my achievement with the eggs, I decided to make a vegetable casserole. I doubt I’ve ever cooked a casserole on my own before. I don’t think it turned out quite right (too many veggies, not enough bread and soup), but it tastes fantastic even if it lacks the appropriate casserole texture and weight.

After that, I decided to use up our oldest potatoes and the remains from a box of instant potato flakes by making a hybrid homemade-box batch of garlic mashed potatoes. It had the chunky consistency of homemade, but the flakes made it a much bigger batch that it would have otherwise been. Again, I’ve never actually made mashed potatoes by starting with actual potatoes – I have no shame about going to the box of flakes – but it was fun to learn how to do it the “proper” way.

Now that I was in the swing of things, I cooked some pasta to go with the leftover pizza sauce taking up space in the fridge. After that, it was breaded baked tofu strips. Tomorrow I might even taste them and see how they turned out.

I so rarely get the impulse to cook and experiment, it made for a nice day.

Trapped under a puppy-shaped lap warmer that snores.I ended up running to the neighborhood ghetto grocery store a couple times and spent $12 on ingredients, paper towels, and generic brand diet soda.

After all that cleaning and cooking (and dog-sitting), I finally sat down and flipped on the news. Frankie climbed up on my lap and held me down. She’s getting big really quickly now and alternates between psycho-puppy mode where nothing will stop her or slow her down and cute, affectionate mode.

Jennifer and Jacob were certainly grateful when they both got home after 11pm. Now that they’re officially engaged, I know that my duty as a queer activist is to destroy their relationship and prevent them from getting married, but I’m going to let this one go because they’ve been such awesome friends and roommates.

Anyway, tomorrow’s a work night and I’m up awfully late.

  1. Mmm. I love mashed potatoes. Or any kind of potato in general.
And shouldn’t you not be eating pasta? That has lots of carbs!!
But basically, this entry tells me that when I visit you when you’re in NY, you’re cooking dinner. hah

  2. I am on my way home right now to eat some vegetable casserole!! Bravo Jere!

I have to say coming home late last night would have been less awkward had we not discovered you washing dishes and singing Barbara Streisand’s ‘The Way We Were’ in nothing but a gingham apron.

    Domestic goddess indeed.

  3. Congratulations on the weight loss!
    Now I want mashed potatoes.
