It’s Only Money
Tuesday, July 21st, 2009We haven’t started yet and I already wish law school had an easy button. Sadly, I don’t think a trip to Staples will actually solve anything.
My tuition bill from Fordham says my federal Stafford loans have been approved and applied to my account. My guarantor says my loans have been approved.
But then I got a letter from my bank/lender yesterday. I’ve enjoyed the customer service from my bank over the years. They are very LGBT-friendly and have always treated me well. If I’m going to be massively in debt, I choose them. Or I did, anyway.
They didn’t approve my loan. Not because I’m a bad customer. Not because of a credit problem. Not because they don’t lend money to students. Not even because they don’t lend money to law students. They decided (this summer, apparently) that they wouldn’t lend money to law students attending my school.
So, long story short, instead of spending yesterday working out the details about, you know, moving into the dorm this weekend and getting my change of address processed, et cetera, I spent the day reapplying for those loans through a different lender (recommended by my school this time) with whom I have no previous relationship.
The fine folks at the financial aid office assure me that it’s okay, that I will probably still be allowed through the doors when classes start, and that I shouldn’t miss any important deadlines. Still, when you spend your life living in the “worst possible scenario” place…

Damn, that sucks! Talk about adding stress onto stress…
Did the bank say *why* they weren’t lending money to the students going to there?

The bank didn’t, but my school said that its not uncommon in this economy. I suspect it has something to do with regional markets and location.

That must have been frustrating. Sure, it should all work out in the end, but like you need this while trying to start a new phase of your education and beginning of a new career and moving to a new city.

Okay, I’d be freaking. Who needs that hassle right now? Mojo that everything goes smoothly from here on in.

How awful! I wish I could wave a magic wand and make it better. Hope things sort themselves out soon.

I feel your pain completely. The summer before my last year of college, I had a terrifying surprise when I found out that I was receiving a significantly smaller chunk of $$$ than I had my previouz yearz. Then began countless meetingz with financial aid and numerous formz and me not sleeping/eating cuz I was too anxious to tink about anything else.
BUT! I got it sorted out and so will you! Trust me, the college wants your $$$ so they will help you try and get it for them…you going to school is just a little side effect of it.

You definitely shouldn’t have a problem starting classes with an unpaid bill…. Last semester, I didn’t have my whole bill paid until April! Oops.
