Building my playlist for the drive this weekend. You might notice a theme.

Song Title Artist
My Blue Manhattan Ryan Adams
Daughters of the Soho Riots The National
Hard Times In New York Town (Bob Dylan Cover) Cat Power
Famous Flower of Manhattan The Avett Brothers
One Day You’ll Dance For Me, New York City Thomas Dybdahl
New York Lasse Passage
Empire State Guster
Bruce Wayne Campbell Interviewed On The Roof Of The Chelsea Hotel, 1979 Okkervil River
Manhattan Sean Morrissey
St. Brigid Of Broadway Rachel Taylor Brown
Manhattan Blossom Dearie
New York City Serenade (Bruce Springsteen Cover) Pete Yorn

My playlist actually has about 106 songs in it (7.7 hours for a 12 hour drive), but the list here reflects several of my favorites that I believe to be already freely offered on the internet by the artists themselves (trying to avoid the angry lawyers of the music industry).

What music absolutely has to be in my moving to New York road trip mix tape?

  2. You forgot “Empire State” by Fleetwood Mac. Actually, you didn’t. It’s one of their few songs that I don’t like.

Thomas Dybdahl?! I’m surprised he’s on this list. One of my favorite artists ever, Maria Mena, did a song with him called “So Sweet.” That’s the only time I’ve ever seen his name and was surprised when it was here. You should check it out:

And I’d add “Manhattan” by Kings of Leon.

Thomas Dybdahl was a recent discovery – he reminds me of Bonnie Prince Billy or Damien Rice.

And I’ve added Kings of Leon to the list. Thanks.

Ah. Damien Rice. I LOVE his first CD. I listen to it all the way through.
I was disappointed by 9 overall, but “9 Crimes” is in my top 3 Rice songs. If Dybdahl reminds you of him, I should check out more of his music.

I wasn’t a huge fan until I saw him in concert in Oakland a few years ago. In live performance, the nuance and musicality really shine through.

  3. YAY! Guster and Blossom Dearie! Too bad she died recently.

I can only handle Guster in short bursts, but I love those short bursts.

I feel the same, with the exception of “Satellite”, I love that song. Thought I really like “Manifest Destiny” as well.

Not sure if you like The B-52′s, but “Give Me Back My Man” is a great driving song. I also like “Sexx Laws” by Beck (“Midnite Vultures” is a great cd) and I’ll submit for your approval “Puberty” and “Seal My Fate” by Belly.

    Enrico: I *love* “Empire State”!

I’ll look it up. I have “The Only Living Boy in New York” already, and I’m trying to stick to (at most) 2 songs by an artist.

I sorta feel like I should have the original Bruce Springsteen version, but I like this cover a lot.
