What’s the 1L Year Like?

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

I fear we’ve reached that point in the semester when time to do much blogging becomes even rarer than before. We got our long memo assignment this weekend, student group committee obligations are coming due, professors are beginning to realize they have to adjust their syllabus to finish the course, etc. And, of course, after about two months of school, it’s really hard to put the same level of effort into preparation and study as those first few weeks.

Today I dropped the ball. I just couldn’t spend the day reading case law. Or doing anything else. I watched TV shows online all day and didn’t even leave my room for a workout or chores. This, of course, means that I’m working my ass off tomorrow and Monday morning.

Admittedly, I took on too much in my first semester. I’ve got the Stein Scholars program (where I’m a committee chair and a 1L rep to the governing council), I’m a BarBri rep (1 hour a week at the table), I’ve volunteered my time with the OUTLaws (tabling for the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell) and the Domestic Violence Action Center (bake sale and a courtroom advocate program next month), and I’m trying to do some writing for Fordham Follies (the law school musical coming this spring). I also committed to starting a study group with one of my friends, but I need to follow up and get that going and recruit maybe one or two others to join us because it’s time to start putting emphasis on studying for finals.

The one thing I haven’t done well is socializing with my classmates. I keep missing the “bar review” events. First it was a money problem, then it was a time problem, now its a little of both.

Anyway, I guess I’m whining, but because this blog is also my journal, I thought I ought to at least try to capture the experience a bit.

So, previewing this week, on Wednesday night I’ll be talking with one or more New York State Senators, a representative of the Governor and a few other guests about the New York Senate’s interesting stalemate earlier this year. I’m the event moderator and I’m really excited.

Beyond Dysfunction: The Real Story Behind the New York State Senate Stalemate and its Public Policy Implications

Date(s): 10.28.09 | Wed
Time: 4:30PM – 6:00PM
Location: Room 312
Sponsor: Stein Scholars

All are invited to attend this important panel with key public figures from the government and media. The panel discussion will cover the events of the stalemate, what it meant for key legislation, the political and historical context, and the implications for future sessions. Panel participants will include: Liz Krueger, New York State Senator; Peter Kiernan, Counsel to Governor David A. Paterson; Elizabeth Benjamin, New York Daily News; Susan Lerner, Common Cause. This event is organized by the Fordham Law Stein Scholars, and co-sponsored by Fordham Law American Constitutional Society, Fordham Law Democrats, and the Fordham Law ACLU.

On Thursday night, as a member of the Stein council, I’ll be attending the annual Stein-Prize Dinner, this year recognizing Judge John Keenan.

And then, of course, there are classes. And somewhere in the madness, research for my long memo, outlining, and reading for classes.

Blue equals classes or non-optional events, red equals things that I have committed to but are ultimately optional if I have a nervous breakdown:

  1. Omg! You totally stole my blog entry idea! I was gonna tell everyone I’m so busy so don’t expect quality entries. Then I was gonna take a pic of my iCal, all filled up.
So, since you’re so busy, does this mean our McDonald’s date is postponed until graduation?

I’ll always make time for you. And notice how Friday night is plenty empty.

  2. Sigh. I’m having a nervous breakdown on your behalf. Bake sale sounds interesting though. Hang in there and hopefully you’ve learned your lesson for next term. Try not to do everything your first year, spread out the fun. :-)

  3. So when do you get to like sleep or breathe? Gotta say, that meeting with the state politician thing sounds pretty damn cool. If I was in the area, I’d SO be there.

And you and Enrickyricardo have a McDonald’s date? I’m so jellerz. Dunk a nugget for me when you’re there, or clink your paper cups in a toast to me or whatever, kay? :)

Oh, Enrico talks a big game, but I can’t get him to actually commit to coming into New York for an actual McD’s value menu date (feat. two poor students). I’d take matters into my own hands and go to him, but a) I don’t have the time, b) I’m not entirely sure how to get there, c) it’s in New Jersey, fergawdsake, and d) I don’t want to come on too strong and scare him off.

He won’t come into NY for a McD dinner date with you? What the hell? Shoot, I’d come into NY for a McD dinner date with you…and that would mean another 3.5 hour train ride! Enrickyricardo needs to put up or shut up (notice, I said put UP, not put OUT! That’s a whole nuther post.)
