Elle’s Monday Motivation
Monday, November 2nd, 2009Have you made your Thanksgiving plans yet?
Our blog mascot offers some words of inspiration:

Maybe the definition of home is the place where you are never forgiven. So you may always belong there, bound by guilt. And maybe the cost of belonging is worth it. – Gregory Maguire

Is that a butler cutting up the food?! I wish we had a butler at my casa for Thanksgiving. I hate when one of my family members cuts the cranberry sauce all uneven! Boo. We only have a maid. But I can’t yell at her to cut the cranberry sauce evenly cause I can’t say “cranberry sauce” in her native tongue. And she speaks that maid language, Español.

It’s “Cut-o el Sauce-o de cranberrie-os EVENLY.” You have to yell the last word because it’s basically English and the maids can’t hear those words unless you say them really loud.

Well ‘rebanar’ is ‘to slice/cut’ and ‘uniformemente’ is ‘evenly.’ So I got that. Maybe you just translate it like ‘sauce of cranberry’ (salsa de arándano).
Either way, I think my mother just fired the maid cause she kept taking off work to go to her daughter’s school functions. Real women sacrifice. So my mom said, “Smile about that” and slammed the door on her cara.

That’s how Dad’s dressed in the old timey days Enrico.
I have to say I’m pretty lucky. My family doesn’t guilt me much, although I think my Mom intercepts the guilt on my behalf. She’s like a guilt shield. Right now my Grandma is guilting her because my Mom is getting ready to go to Texas for 4.5 months. Seriously, who wouldn’t leave northern Manitoba for 4.5 months of snow up to your ass if you could? The question is can I manage to avoid my biannual (biennial? – every two years) trip back home this summer without large quantities of guilt. Hmmmm. But I love ‘em.

Is that from “Wicked?!?!?”

I think so. I might have also been from “Son of a Witch” but I don’t recall exactly.

Tam, you need the Jere Spanish/English translation manual for work.
I guess I’ll be taking my turkey with mashed potatoes and a side of guilt this Thanksgiving.

I feel like I should point out that I lurve my family (well, most of them most of the time) and rarely feel all that guilt-tripped (except when I miss Jessi’s birthday). Elle just liked the quote.

I don’t feel much familial guilt. And Thanksgiving is a big huge family reunion type of thing, we rent out a community center and like 50-75 people show up. It’s a big buffet thing, a big gathering of extended family. I don’t have many problems with them….course, I only ever see most of them on Thanksgiving, so that’s a good thing.
HUGS….
