It Gets Better

Monday, December 6th, 2010

As I watch the Prop 8 hearing in the 9th Circuit, and after reading about a study finding LGBT youth are likely to receive harsher and stricter punishment from school and legal authorities, I thought I’d share our Fordham OUTLaws “It Gets Better” video for Dan Savage’s It Gets Better Project. I shot the footage for this several weeks ago and finished editing the footage into a single video late, late last night.

Studying for finals is going fine, if half-heartedly. I don’t really care about my grade in one of the classes I have a final for and feel rather confident about the other.

ETA: Yay! We’re famoso!

  1. What a crazy story! Some people are creeps. And I would have been annoyed because I don’t even like cake.

Finals are so lame. I’m only excited about making a magazine for my Magazine Writing class. I was picked to be editor-in-chief! YAY.

The crazy part is how much time and effort they put into making me feel like shit. I mean, they spent money to buy cake mix and frosting.

Congrats on being EIC. In the real world, it means yelling at people and just deciding you’ll do it all yourself when they fuck up. You should be good at that.

(that tonight’s gonna be a good night)

  2. Good luck on finals Jere. Great job on the video. The story you told made me angry. Some people are so stupid. On a more positive note, you totally have an awesome voice.

    Thank you.

  3. The cake – what a horrible thing for someone to do. I’m sorry you had to go through that. And how wonderful that you put this video together – especially with all you have going on. It’s people like you and your friends that are making things better for generations to come.

Good luck with your finals : ).

Thanks. This was one of those projects that took most of the semester only because I only had a few hours at a time to do the editing.

  4. Super job to everyone. Very touching stories and I’m sure they made a different to others out there who needed that little voice to tell them they aren’t alone. Congrats and hang in there until you get a break from school.

Almost done – one week to go. Thanks.

  5. GREAT VIDEO! I must say that is DOES get better with each generation. When I was in high school I was bullied, and no one ever called me a faggot or gay (I think because my father was a minister – no one in that small town wanted to feel ‘the wrath of God’, I think), but I sensed that was why I was targeted. It wasn’t until I stood up to my bully that it stopped.

That bitch needed to be put in check.

I applaud the gay men and women who broke down the closet door in the 60′s/70′s. They truly paved a way for each successive generation to live and be proud of who they are.

Thank you. I wish standing up to bullies always worked – I had no problem standing up to mine, it only made them more angry. Usually because I was smarter than them.

  6. That cake story is weird. Sorry that happened to you!

I have a similar mantra I repeat to myself whenever I am sad: “A moment like this, some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this.”

Silly Josh, that’s not a mantra, it’s a low point in American culture. (kidding! I actually liked that song)
