Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.

Liveblogging the RNC, McCain Speech

I set up a new twitter for liveblogging events. Here are my thoughts from tonight’s RNC coverage.

  • Watching MSNBC lose Andrea Mitchell in the balloon drop.
  • The only thing “maverick” about that whole speech (not basic neocon) was the idea that a Latina daughter of a migrant worker is American
  • No one better show up on MSNBC saying he “hit this out of the ballpark.” It was an awful delivery.
  • Why aren’t they embarrassed by the song “Raising McCain”?
  • Bleh, what a terrible delivery of those well-written final words. He was set up for a home-run and decided to bunt.
  • “If you find faults with our country, make it a better one.” Like being a community organizer?
  • “I’m not running for president because I think I’m blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me …” Just God.
  • The POW story is touching, really, but the more I hear it, the more I think, “So, what does it have to do with being President?”
  • I guess we’re done with the policy section of the speech. Time for more “I was a POW” reminders.
  • As a foreign relations expert, is it wise to antagonize Iran and Russia in the same breath? Don’t we need Russia’s cooperation with Iran?
  • “We must use all resources … to rescue our economy from the damage caused by rising oil prices” Our environment is not just a “resource”
  • “We will drill new wells offshore, and we’ll drill them now.” Why don’t you wait until after hurricane season?
  • McCain: “I want schools to answer to parents and students.” How about answering to the needs of international standards and the marketplace?
  • The “boooos” remind me of a game show.
  • “…the Latina daughter of migrant workers. We’re all God’s children and we’re all Americans.” I know some Republicans who disagree.
  • McCain “I don’t work for a party.” Really? Tell us one way you’re going to break with Republican politics right now. Bueller? Bueller?
  • Okay, some people think it was “ground noise” - will reserve judgment until seeing it again.
  • If he just said “brown noise” (instead of the standard “white noise”) he might as well have said “ignore the nigger” IMO
  • Did he just say “brown noise?”
  • McCain steals Obama’s platform: “Despite our differences, much more unites us than divides us.”
  • McCain speech - less than 40 breaths to the first mention of 9/11.
  • Delegate diversity at RNC: 93% white, 5% Hispanic, 2% black http://tinyurl.com/5rswp9
  • There’s a higher percentage of racial diversity in the McCain family than the Republican delegation (only 36 black delegates out of 2380)
  • That’s the secon time I’ve heard mama McCain’s voice this week: http://tinyurl.com/6h6sne
  • McCain intro video: “POW” Really!?! I did not know that! </sarcasm>
  • More on transracial adoption: http://www.dollslikeme.com/html/adoption.html
  • I wonder how all the people who grumble about racism in transracial adoptions are reacting to Cindy McCain’s speech.
  • Cindy McCain “our party arose from a great battle for human rights, dignity, and equality for all people” except gays, muslims and liberals.
  • Can I buy three of those families a new home with your outfit again, Cindy McCain? http://tinyurl.com/6xgmtl
  • OMG, is this Cindy McCain or Angelina Jolie’s introductory video. Come to think of it, both broke up marriages…
  • Palin love video: “When Alaska’s maverick joined America’s maverick, the world shook, the world trembled.” see 2 Samuel 22:8
  • “Military force is too blunt an instrument to be successful against terrorist groups” - RAND Corporation http://tinyurl.com/6c6gk2
  • The surge is not “working.” Any large presence of U.S. troops will stem violence, but that doesn’t mean progress is being made.
  • That wasn’t a tribute to 9/11 victims, that was a tribute to warmongering.
  • Setting up to liveblog McCain speech tonight.

I was wrong

Sarah Palin

Well, I would have put money on Tim Pawlenty, but the McCain camp surprised pretty much everyone by choosing Gov. Sarah Palin from Alaska. No offense to my friends from the beautiful state of Alaska - where I spent one of the most memorable summers of my life - but Alaskan politicians are batshit insane. Senator Ted Stevens (”The Internet is not something you just dump something on. It’s not a big truck. It’s a series of tubes.” June 28) is about the most corrupt Senator left in office. Despite some bizarre libertarian leanings (relaxed marijuana policy, big support for federal subsidizing of many Alaska programs an people - a.k.a. “pork” for Stevens), no state has had less support for Democrat presidential candidates in history.

Palin herself is anti-choice, largely anti-gay (although, again, Queerty notes a libertarian streak when she vetoed an anti-gay bill after first taking office; Bilerico provides some deeper analysis showing a homophobic streak again), is a huge NRA flunky, supports teaching “creationism” in science classes, and is pro-death penalty. While I admire some of the anti-oil corruption work she’s done since getting elected in Alaska, she couldn’t be further away from me on important social issues without changing her last name to Huckabee.

I really hope Hillary stands firm on her pledge to do everything she can to get Obama elected, because McCain’s choice of Palin couldn’t be more transparent in his desire to steal Hillary supporters away from Obama.

And let’s remember that while history will be made at the end of this general election, a female Vice Presidential nominee of a major party is not itself historic. Mondale/Ferraro, anyone?

Who Watches the Watchmen?

Please, please don’t let this suck. The trailer is promising, but I’ve been let down before. I care about this almost as much as I cared going in to the first X-men movie.

If for some strange reason you’ve never read Watchmen by Alan Moore yet, please do so before March of next year.

Another Lazy Weekend

I can’t believe it’s a week until Pride. Apparently my organization is doing a booth and marching in the parade, which is better than having no plans at all or having to leave early (like last year), but I really don’t want to spend any time working the booth or marching.

I’m trying to be really good about money over the next few weeks. If I’m really good about not spending money on silly things, I think I can have about 10K saved by the end of August - which will allow me to take my vacation in September, apply to law schools, and meet some other goals.

The temperature finally dropped this morning. Yesterday was almost unbearable without air conditioning.

I’m considering another movie this afternoon, but that violated my being good with money rule. It would be better to stick with my Netflix DVDs.

Do You Hear Me?

Inspired by Chris, this blog is going dark in recognition of the Day of Silence. No twitter updates, no new blogs, no email, no facebook or myspace updates until Saturday.

Interesting…

Crazy Blind Date: Hmm, tempting… very tempting. I did make it one of my new year resolutions to go on at least 3 bona fide dates.

Unfortunately, I don’t feel very attractive right now. I did my weigh-in at the gym tonight, and I’m back to my heaviest weight since high school. Good thing I’m starting up with a personal trainer again next week.

Oh, and this video may be the greatest thing ever…

Decisions, Decisions

I’m trying to decide between a movie or going to bed early. I messed up my neck last night and it’s been really sore all day, even with Tylenol. On the other hand, a movie might be a good way to relax from the week.

Sunday Aborted

Well, I woke up this morning stiff and sore. Instead of heading to the final day of WonderCon, I just stayed in bed and watched movies. Not interested in watching the Oscars this year, either, but I might keep it on while I watch more DVDs.

I am Bogglific!

One of the fun and unique things about my office are the Boggle tournaments. We play for keeps (especially Cady) in real-time games and on the Bogglific application for Facebook.

Yesterday I took a sick day to sleep off the feelings of a coming flu. It didn’t stop me from winning yesterday’s round. Today, however, when bragging about my victory, Cady said “Just ‘cuz you got lucky…” Uh-huh. When she wins, it’s skill, but when I win, it’s luck. Riiiiiiggghhhtt.

So, this will live on in blog-land to shame Miss Cady.

P.S. If you’re looking for me on facebook…

Sick.

The long days, stress and tension of the last weeks before my company’s annual summit have finally got to me. I’m stuffed up, my throat hurts, and I just want to sleep through the entire weekend. Unfortunately, that’s not really an option. I’ve got to go into the office and finish up some projects whiel it’s quiet. I just hope I feel better before Monday the 24th. Last time I flew when I was sick was such a nightmare that I really, really don’t want to repeat that experience. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of taking sick days and riding it out this time.
